Service Learning Roles
For a service learning program to be successful the following roles are necessary:
Faculty:
Consider your course learning objectives. What objectives could be met through community involvement rather than a traditional assignment? Is there a research topic where real-life experiences would enhance the opportunity? You may have your own ideas for potential community partners or you can meet with other faculty and service learning staff to brainstorm.
Students:
Provide the service and learn so they should play an active role in the selection of the service learning assignment(s). Ask them what are they interested in?
Community Partner:
- Identifies service needs and supervise students' work and contributions
- Provides job descriptions
- Meets with student candidates for service-learning placement
- Provide orientation, clear instructions and training
